In Charles Dickens book Great Expectations Pip, the protagonist and narrator, reflects on a day that changed his life. “That was a memorable day to me, for it made great changes in me. But it is the same with any life. Imagine one selected day struck out of it and think how different its course would have been. Pause you who read this and think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day.”
Think about a memorable day that changed your life. What would your life be like today if that day had been struck out of your life? I fell in love twenty-six years ago and have been married to my sweetheart for twenty-five years. That was a memorable and happy day and I can’t imagine what my life would be like without that memorable day. We have three beautiful children and a precious grandchild. I wonder what my life would be like without those four memorable days when they were born.
Eleven years ago, we decided to start our own business and thankfully things have gone quite well since that memorable day. I can remember the agony and sleepless nights before we made the decision to venture out on our own. And yet if that selected day had been removed from our lives things would be very different now and I know I would be frustrated and unhappy. If any of the other memorable days in our life had been selectively removed, our lives would be very different and most likely far less fulfilling and enjoyable.
What impact have memorable days had in your life? When you think back on them do they make you smile? Now think ahead and consider memorable days still to come. What decisions do you need to make today that will impact your future? What will happen if you don’t make those decisions? Most big decisions require a big dose of courage and faith. The decision to become an independent retailer was a big decision for most of you. Opening new stores, employing staff, launching a new website are all big decisions and can often make the difference between failure and success.
The landscape for retailing is changing at a rapid pace. Traditional methods of retailing no longer apply and the retailers who succeed will be the ones who are brave enough to try new things. These are exciting times for independent retailers because there are so many tools available to help grow your business. You may want to consider creating your own video channel and share your expertise online. Perhaps you could publish a weekly blog, or you could even write a book. What one thing could you do that would have a significant impact on your business? If you chose to implement your idea could this be your memorable day? The day that changed the course of your business.
